When it comes to on-screen entertainment, serious fans of television and movies always have a personal favorite genre. And whether their category of choice is action, suspense, comedy, romance, drama or horror, entertainment aficionados of all types will have good reason to get excited soon. That is because, beginning on Nov. 23 and running through the entire extended Thanksgiving weekend, star-studded premium channels HBO and CINEMAX will be delivering shining examples of all of the above to FTC Digital TV subscribers at no charge!
FTC is excited to announce that a free, 7-day preview of HBO and CINEMAX is coming soon. The “freeview” will begin on Nov. 23 and run through Nov. 29. And making this free event a big win for movie and TV lovers alike, FTC Digital TV subscribers will have access to some of the premium networks’ biggest blockbuster films and most talked-about TV shows.
Here are just a few highlights of the offerings in store during the upcoming free preview of HBO and CINEMAX on FTC channels 360-393:
In The Heights: Fans of the Broadway smash-hit Hamilton will want to make sure they catch this high-spirited musical as it is based on a stage musical co-written by Lin Manuel-Miranda of Hamilton fame. Starring Anthony Ramos as a lovable bodega owner in the largely Dominican New York City neighborhood of Washington Heights, the film sheds light on the immigrant experience in America as the story’s leading characters chase their own interpretations of the American dream.
(Appears on Nov. 23 at 12:50 p.m. on HBO SIGNATURE.)
Wonder Woman 1984: A sequel to 2017’s Wonder Woman, this 2020 film sees the immortal Amazon warrior of DC comics fame attempting to lay low as an archaeologist at the Smithsonian Museum at the height of the Cold War (all after saving the world in the cinematic predecessor). But the superhero’s plans to remain under the radar are forced to change when she and past romantic flame Gen. Steve Trevor must join forces to save humankind (again), this time from supervillains Maxwell Lord and The Cheetah.
(Appears on Nov. 23 at 9 p.m. on HBO SIGNATURE and on Nov. 25 at 7 a.m. on HBO.)
How To With John Wilson: This comedic docuseries follows “anxious New Yorker” and filmmaker John Wilson as he roams the streets of New York City intent on filming tutorials on an array of subjects ranging from “how to make small talk” to “how to improve your memory” and “how to cook the perfect risotto.” The lessons never seem to fully materialize, though, as chance encounters and conversations always seem to take the narrative in unpredictable, and often hilarious, directions.
(Viewers can catch multiple episodes of this series during the freeview. Visit hbo.com for scheduling details.)
Underwater: This 2020 science fiction/action/horror film starring Kristen Stewart follows a crew of workers on a drilling station at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, the world’s deepest oceanic ditch. When an earthquake strikes and leaves the crew stranded nearly seven miles below the Pacific Ocean’s surface without any way to summon rescuers, panic begins to set in. And the sense of fear only escalates when they discover that not only do they have unwanted company on the ocean floor, but that the monstrous, never-seen-before creatures chasing them are out for blood.
(Appears on OUTERMAX Nov. 25 at 8:18 p.m. and Nov. 26 at 1:53 p.m.; on ACTION MAX Nov. 25 at 10 p.m. and Nov. 28 at 6:32 p.m.; on CINEMAX and CINEMÁX Nov. 28 at 2:50 a.m.)
The Invisible Man: Released in 2020, this horror/science fiction film stars Elisabeth Moss (best known for her roles in The Handmaid’s Tale and Mad Men) and is based on the 1897 H.G. Wells novel of the same name. The story is centered on Cecilia Kass, who escapes an abusive relationship with her husband, an optics engineer and wealthy businessman, by drugging him and fleeing. She seems to have completely escaped his grasp when, weeks later, he commits suicide and leaves her millions of dollars. But she begins to suspect he may have faked his own death when she senses a menacing presence in her new home … and strange happenings begin to become the norm.
(Appears on ACTION MAX Nov. 25 at 9:08 a.m. and 7:55 p.m., and on OUTERMAX Nov. 27 at 12 a.m.)
Beverly Hills Cop marathon: Viewers seeking some 1980s and 1990s nostalgia will be treated to a triple dose of it with back-to-back showings of the three-part action/comedy series Beverly Hills Cop. The original 1984 film and its sequels, released in 1987 and 1994, all see Detroit cop Axel Foley hilariously played by renowned comedian Eddie Murphy. The films follow the adventures of Foley as he cracks both cases and jokes while helping the Los Angeles police force catch their criminals.
(The marathon appears on CINEMAX and CINEMÁX Nov. 25 starting at 8:50 a.m., then runs again on 5STAR MAX Nov. 26 starting at 10:53 p.m.)
